Introducing the 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross URBAN HYBRID: A Blend of Style and Efficiency - In Indonesia now, Malaysia?

Toyota has officially launched the Yaris Cross in Indonesia, just a month after its ASEAN debut. This stylish compact SUV comes in three enticing variants, catering to a wide range of customers. Let's delve into what this impressive vehicle has to offer: The 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross URBAN HYBRID has made its mark as a front-wheel-drive four-door wagon, available in the Australian market since August 1, 2022, with the classification MXPJ10R. This versatile vehicle falls into the category of a light SUV, crafted in Japan, and comes with a starting price of $36,000 before on-road costs.
1. Variants and Pricing: G Type: Starting at IDR 351 million (approximately RM 109,000) S Type: Priced at IDR 407.7 million (about RM 126,700) S HV Type: The top-tier hybrid variant, available at IDR 440.6 million (around RM 136,900)
2. Power and Performance: For the G and S variants, power is derived from a 2NR-VE 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, delivering 106 PS (105 hp) and 138 Nm of torque. This engine pairs with a CVT automatic, while the G offers a five-speed manual option. On the other hand, the S HV is the hybrid variant, featuring a 2NR-VEX 1.5-liter NA four-cylinder engine combined with an electric traction motor, resulting in an impressive 80 PS (79 hp). This hybrid setup is automatic-only and boasts a lithium-ion battery.
3. Power and Efficiency: Under the hood, the Yaris Cross is equipped with a 1.5L INLINE 3 engine, delivering 67 kW of power at 5500 rpm and 120 Nm of torque at 3800 rpm, all managed by a Continuous Variable transmission. What sets the Yaris Cross URBAN HYBRID apart is its eco-friendly approach, using a mere 3.8L/100km of Unleaded Petrol-Electric Hybrid in combined city and highway driving, with CO2 emissions totaling 86g.
4. Impressive Range: With a fuel tank capacity of 36 liters, this vehicle boasts a remarkable range, allowing it to travel up to 947 km on a single tank, a testament to its efficiency.
5. Dimensions: The Yaris Cross stands at 1590mm (62.6 inches) in height, stretches to 4180mm (164.6 inches) in length, and spans 1765mm (69.5 inches) in width, with a wheelbase of 2560mm (100.8 inches). This results in an unladen weight of 1190kg (2623.5 lbs), offering a balanced blend of size and maneuverability. These dimensions place it in a similar size category as the Honda HR-V, providing a sense of familiarity for SUV enthusiasts.
6. Ground Clearance: One of its standout features is a 170mm ground clearance, making it suitable for various road conditions. Additionally, it offers a 400kg braked and 400kg unbraked towing capacity, providing added utility for your adventures, giving it an edge over the HR-V, which ranges from 183 to 196 mm based on variant (per Malaysian specifications).
7. Standard Features: The base G variant comes well-equipped with features like 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps, a digital instrument cluster, a 9-inch Display Audio system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, and a comprehensive safety suite that includes blind spot monitoring, hill start assist, and more. The S and S HV variants add even more, with 18-inch alloys, a powered tailgate with hands-free access, paddle shifters, drive modes, leather upholstery, and a panoramic view monitor. All variants come with Toyota Safety Sense, featuring advanced safety technologies.
8. Wheels and Tires: The Yaris Cross URBAN HYBRID is equipped with 215/50 R18 front and rear tires, complementing its road performance.
9. Optional Accessories: Buyers can opt for the GR Parts Aero Package for the S and S HV, which includes additional exterior enhancements. Other optional accessories include a cargo net, air purifier, and a dashcam for the G variant.
10. Color Choices: All variants are available in Super White II, Greenish Gunmetal, Attitude Black Mica, and Dark Red. Non-hybrid variants also offer Silver Metallic. The S variant adds two exclusive colors, Platinum White Pearl and Spicy Scarlet, while the S HV is available with two-tone paint schemes.
11. Safety The Yaris Cross has been awarded a commendable 5-star safety rating by ANCAP. To identify your vehicle, the VIN number is located on the Right Hand Front Floorpan, and the compliance plate can be found on the Pass Side On B-Pillar.
The 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross URBAN HYBRID is a remarkable addition to the automotive landscape, offering a harmonious blend of power, efficiency, and safety. It's a vehicle that not only makes a statement but also promises a remarkable driving experience. This platform is shared with the Perodua Ativa in Malaysia, sparking rumors of an upcoming B-segment SUV from Perodua, codenamed D66B. If such a model becomes a reality, the Yaris Cross offers a tantalizing preview of what's to come.
Intrigued by the Indonesian-spec Yaris Cross? It's certainly a vehicle that's making waves in the compact SUV segment and soon to Malaysia.
