Visitors and residents bound for the scenic retreat of Genting Highlands may soon find themselves reaching for their wallets, as toll fees are set to make an appearance.
A recent report by Sin Chew Daily confirmed that toll booths are currently under construction at two key locations: midway up Genting Highlands and near the Gohtong Jaya intersection that leads to Batang Kali. According to a representative from the company overseeing road management in the highlands, it's inevitable that toll charges will be implemented for the journey uphill.
Recently, photos of a structure being constructed on the Batang Kali-Gohtong Jaya road began circulating online, sparking speculation that it might be a toll plaza. Once the toll booths are operational, travelers ascending to Genting Highlands will be required to pay a toll, although no charges will be imposed for the descent.
is overseeing the management of these toll booths. The company revealed that Genting Malaysia Bhd initially constructed the roads in the mid-1960s and has been responsible for their maintenance ever since.
It has been rumored that the toll is expected to commence in June 2024, with charges ranging between RM2.50 and RM3.00. However, the company representative dispelled these rumors, emphasizing that further discussions are needed before any official announcements can be made.
The toll booths are not the only responsibility of Lingkaran Cekap; they are also responsible for roadworks in Genting Highlands. This encompasses slope and landscape maintenance, landslide repairs, streetlight maintenance, tree clearance, and, most significantly, road maintenance, which is a costly affair due to the frequent and extensive repairs required.
It has also been confirmed that multiple toll stations will be established at Gohtong Jaya and the mid-hill section of Genting, ensuring that those traveling from Kuala Lumpur or Batang Kali will be subject to toll charges.
The introduction of tolls has raised questions about how these charges will be applied across various types of vehicles, such as private cars and tour buses.
Despite the buzz surrounding the toll booths, there has been no official confirmation or discussions regarding this matter in the state executive council meeting. Both the State Unity, Tourism, and Culture Committee chairman and the Pahang Public Works, Transport, and Health Committee chairman have expressed uncertainty and are seeking further information.
It's worth noting that the toll charges will consider the expenses associated with road maintenance. Resorts World Genting has a 49.4% interest in Lingkaran Cekap, the company managing the toll booths.
With the establishment of these toll booths, visitors to Genting Highlands will soon be required to pay for their journey, as both the ascent from the base of the hill and the drive from Batang Kali will incur these charges. A toll will only be imposed once on the journey uphill.
Despite rumors of a June 2024 rollout and estimates ranging from RM2.50 to RM3.50, a final decision is yet to be reached regarding the implementation date, specific toll charges, and potential discounts. A formal statement from Genting Highlands is expected to shed more light on these developments in the near future.
Please note that this information regarding the potential toll booths in Genting Highlands is derived from a recent report, and an official statement from Genting Highlands is anticipated.
